Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, A guide to Published Arrival Records of about 500,000 Passengers Who Came to the United States and Canada in the Seventeenth, Eighteenth, and Nineteenth Centuries
edited by P. William Filby with Mary K. Meyer, is a series of books widely used by every genealogist trying to locate the home country of immigrants to America. This series has taken information from several
published lists of immigrants and early citizens of America. Original records have NOT been used to compile this. The series of books covers a massive amount of information and is an excellent place to get ideas
of immigrant origins. However, because information has only been taken from secondary sources, mistakes happen. For example, an entry for Steinwender, Daniel n.a.; Philadelphia, Pa.. 1752
4417 p 48 is listed in Volume 3, O-Z and contains two errors. 4417 refers to the source used to obtain the information about Daniel Steinwender
. In the front of the volume is a key that shows that 4417 refers to a book by Friedrich
KREBS called, "Pennsylvania Dutch Pioneers from Baden-Durlach: 1752." The Pennsylvania Dutchman 8:4 (Summer-Fall 1957), p. 48 (Lancour 177). A look at this source shows that the information for this
book was taken from another book called, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, A Publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals In the Port of Philadelphia From 1727 to 1808
by Ralph Beaver Strassburger, L.L.D., edited by William John Hinke, Ph.D., D.D. Krebs' book, Pennsylvania Dutch Pioneers from Baden-Durlach: 1752 shows Steinwender, Daniel
-- of Stein (Pr. 858 Nr. 577, Pr. 1335 Nr. 770). Interestingly, the actual information for Daniel Steinwender in Filby's book, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, for
Daniel's place of origin was omitted. The book only shows him going to Pennsylvania. This is one mistake about Daniel Steinwender. The
next mistake is discovered when looking at Strassbuger and Hinke's book. A thorough search of this book shows that Daniel Steinwender
is NOT LISTED anywhere. When Krebs wrote his book, he errored in citing that Daniel Steinwender
came to Pennsylvania. He claimed Strassburger and Hinke's book as the source but this is a mistake. Actually, Daniel Steinwender
never went to Pennsylvania. He arrived in Charleston, South Carolina in 1752 and was granted land in what became Orangeburgh District, South Carolina. Anytime this series of books is used, it is important to
trace back through every source listed. This index is valuable to genealogists for finding immigrant origins. It does, however, need to be used cautiously because of the lack of original sources used and errors that
occur unintentionally when compiling such a large amount of information. |
